How to crazy pave a feature wall?

Hi there,

I’ve seen heaps of posts for crazy pavers laid on the ground but I’m doing an external undercover wall.

Can anyone direct me to existing how to posts - or let me know if I use the same steps for the floor ones please?

also list /link for exact products I need if possible sorry! )the lighter grout like in inspo pic.

My tiles I’m using are porcelain floor/wall ivory ones from Bunnings

any help appreciated!

Hi @AmberleyXP,

The good news is the process is largely the same as doing it on the ground (adhesive → lay pieces → grout), but the main challenge with a wall is gravity. Keeping those irregular pieces in place while the adhesive sets is the tricky part.

With standard tiles, spacers help hold everything evenly, but with crazy paving you’ll naturally have uneven gaps and shapes, so spacers aren’t as useful. Because of that, you’ll likely need to:

• Work slowly in small sections
• Start from the bottom and build up
• Use painter’s tape or similar to hold pieces in place while they set
• Be prepared for a bit of trial and error getting pieces to sit nicely without slipping

To help with initial grab on a vertical surface, a handy trick is to put a small dollop of Liquid Nails in the centre of the tile, with tile adhesive around it. This can give you that extra hold while the proper adhesive cures.

For grout, this is where crazy paving differs from standard tiling. Because you’ll have wider, irregular joints, normal grout isn’t suitable. You’ll need a wide joint grout, such as: https://www.bunnings.com.au/dunlop-15kg-mid-grey-wide-joint-grout_p0508303 .

Just keep in mind there are limited colour options with wide joint grout compared to standard grout, so your final look may be slightly different to your inspo image depending on what’s available.
