How to rebuild a timber fence?

Hi guys,

I am rebuilding a small fence. I would like to keep the post marked in red as it seems quite sturdy. Is anyone able to guide me on what materials/equipment I would need for this job please as I have never built a fence before.

Great to hear you’re giving this a go, rebuilding a fence is a really rewarding project and a good one to learn on.

If you’re starting from scratch, the main materials you’ll typically need are:

• Fence posts (timber or steel)
• Rails (usually 2–3 per section)
• Palings
• Concrete for setting posts
• Screws or nails suitable for outdoor use

In terms of tools/equipment:

• Post hole digger or auger
• Spirit level and string line for alignment
• Drill/driver or nail gun
• Saw (circular or hand saw depending on cuts)
• Tape measure and square

Since you’re planning to keep the existing post, it’s worth checking it’s still solid and not showing signs of rot at ground level, as that can impact the longevity of the new fence.
