How to install heavy floating shelf thin drywall?

Hi Bunnings community.

I am at loss with what I though would be an easy and quick paint and new shelving renovation for our bedroom.
Paint job was quick and easy. Considering my lack of experience I was quite happy with myself. We wanted a floating shelf on that wall to get rid of the chess of drawer to free space and create a better flow.
made the shelf myself out of some nice wood plank that I tinted.
the shelf brackets are quite heavy so decided to use the anchors bellow as recommended by my local Bunnings rep (very knowledgeable and helpful as always)

All went well until I finally installed the heavy shelves holders and shelf itself. It started tilting down and not showing to be holding well.
the drywall is not thick on the whole wall as we have a sliding door going inside of it as our ensuite bathroom. On the thinner part it’s only about 2cm.

Should it use stronger anchors instead of the current ones I have? Or change the brackets for lighter ones?

Ultimately, a floating shelf bracket should be fixed directly into a timber stud wherever possible. The forces on a floating shelf are much greater than they first appear, and plasterboard fixings are being asked to resist a levering action, not just a straight downward load. A fixing rating is usually based on a load hanging straight down from the wall, but a floating shelf projects out from the wall, so it creates a turning force that tries to pull the top of the fixing out of the wall.

For a simple example, say the shelf itself weighs 5 kg and extends 30 cm from the wall.

That 5 kg shelf creates a downward force of about 49 N. Because it is 30 cm out from the wall, it creates a turning moment of:

5 kg × 0.30 m × 9.81 ≈ 14.7 N·m

So even though the shelf only weighs 5 kg, the wall fixing is dealing with a levering force equivalent to roughly 15 kg acting at 30 cm out from the wall.

If someone then puts another 5 kg on the shelf at the front edge, the force applied to the fixing increases exponentially.

That is why plaster fixings can fail even when the shelf does not seem especially heavy. The bracket is being pulled outward at the top and pushed inward at the bottom, and the plasterboard is not designed for that kind of load over time.

For a floating shelf, the safest answer is a proper fix into a timber stud. If the stud is not in the right place, the better option is usually to move the shelf, change the design, or add a support that spreads the load into the framing rather than relying on plaster alone.
