How to install shelving on plasterboard?

Hi, I need some suggestions on what and how to install shelving on plasterboard, as I have no experience with this type of wall and "heavy duty" project.

I am planning to install 2 wooden shelving (200x24x3cm & 120x24x3cm).

The shelving will be used mostly as a bookshelf but also for displaying some "heavy" accessories (eg: a very few vases & rocks).

I am not sure what would be the average weight capacity for a bookshelf per shelf, based on those measurements.

I have plasterboard walls with metal studs every 45cm.

I already have a magnetic stud finder, and the idea is to align brackets with every metal stud along the length of the shelf.

My questions are:

what type of bolts/screw do I have to buy for the plasterboard and the shelving?

can I use any type of brackets?

any particular recommendation on ensuring stability?

any comments would be highly appreciated, thanks!

You’re on the right track already by locating the metal studs and planning to line your brackets up with them, that’s the most important part for a setup like this.

For fixing into metal studs, you can use self-drilling metal screws (just ensure the screw is long enough to pass through the bracket, plasterboard and into the stud). These will go through the plasterboard and bite into the steel stud without pre-drilling. However, for heavier loads like books plus decorative items, spring toggles can be a better option in some locations. They open up behind the stud if positioned correctly, giving you a much stronger fixing overall.

In terms of brackets, you don’t need anything too exotic, but size matters. A good rule is to choose brackets that are at least two-thirds the depth of your shelf, so for a 240mm deep shelf, look at brackets around 180–200mm. Standard steel brackets will be fine if you use enough of them, but if you want extra strength and rigidity, stayed brackets (with the diagonal support) are the most heavy-duty option.

For stability, a few key points:

• Fix into as many studs as possible along the length, ideally every 450mm as you mentioned
• Use at least two screws per bracket into each stud
• Make sure the shelf itself is well secured to the brackets so it cannot tip or slide
• Keep heavier items closer to the wall rather than right at the front edge

With your shelf sizes, if you space brackets correctly and fix properly into the studs, you should have no issues supporting books and a few heavier decorative pieces.
