The project:
Our laundry was looking a little tired and had practically no storage or bench space, so it became cluttered and uninviting. Therefore, we decided to install new Kaboodle cabinetry top and bottom, a new stone benchtop (Bunnings), repainted the room and fitted a new tiled splashback. The existing washing machine taps had to be relocated and an extra power point added.
- Materials:
Kaboodle Cabinetry; including base and wall cabinets, filler & base end panels, doors, soft close hinges, kickboard.
Lane 164mm Antique Brown Hampton D Handles (3962301).
Clark 45L Single Laundry Tub (0055388).
Think Benchtop, 38mm Alpine (this wasn't the cheapest option, but final result and extra cost was worth it).
Splashback tiles were sourced from 'MDC Tiles and Mosaics".
Tiling accessories from Bunnings included; 6650421 Davco 2L Bright White Pre-Mixed Easy Grout, 6829311 Dunlop 5.5kg Wall Tile Adhesive, 6821826 QEP 1.5mm Cross Tile Spacers 100 Pack, 0194489 QEP 8mm x 1m White Angle L Shape Tile Trim.
- Tools:
Main tools used included; a stud finder, laser level, masking tape, battery drill, tape measure, set of two cabinet levelling stands.
Tiling tools needed; 0227327 Full Boar 115mm Continuous Rim Diamond Blade, 6820927 DTA 6mm Bright Steel Notch Trowel, 6659942 QEP Home Pro Grout Float, 0019245 QEP Variety Sponge Pack, calking gun, diamond hole cutter, and a bucket.
- Step 1:
The design phase: We utilised the Bunnings "In House Laundry Design" tool in consultation with the very helpful Special Orders team. This initial step was invaluable in creating an accurate itemised Kaboodle parts list and project estimate.
- Step 2:
Disconnect washing machine and empty the entire room.
Removed existing laundry tub, some tiles, bench table and a free standing cupboard. I carefully removed and kept the tub piping so we could still use the washing machine in a temporary set-up.
Remove some of the gyprock to allow repositioning of the washing machine taps (licensed plumber required). These taps had been originally installed to suit a top load washing machine that required both cold & hot taps.
Patch the walls and seal.
Added an extra power point (licensed electrician) at floor level to pick up washing machine and freezer.
- Step 3:
Assemble Kaboodle flat packs into the base and wall cabinetry.
Locate studs and mark on wall accordingly.
Mark off height of top and bottom cabinets. We needed a 60cm high tile splashback between cabinets (allow for benchtop thickness).
With an extra pair of hands, mounted the wall cabinets and locate floor base cabinets.
Cut the wall and base filler panels to suit and fitted.
Fixed all cabinet doors and handles (use a template).
Quick coat of paint on wall before benchtop is fitted.
- Step 4:
Once the benchtop arrived and was installed (by others), the new taps were fitted, sink installed and tiling could then commence.
- Step 5:
Grouting of tiles. Best to do in small sections and use good clean sponges.
Fitted tile trims and calking at benchtop.
Job complete.
