How to complete backyard lawn makeover?

Hope you are all well.

I’m looking for some advice on a backyard renovation project and would appreciate your guidance.

I have attached photos of the current backyard, along with an AI-generated concept image showing the general look I’d like to achieve. I’m planning to remove the yucca tree first and complete the area on a cheap budget. I’m not in a hurry, especially since we’re heading into winter.

The space from the covered weed mat through to the yucca tree is around 36 m2, so I’d appreciate advice on the best low-budget way to prepare and finish that space. The area I’ve currently covered with weed mat has been levelled using a mix of free clay soil I received, so I’d also like your advice on whether that base is suitable for lawn preparation, and what else I may need to do before planting.

Could you please advise on:

1. the best steps to take once the yucca is removed,
2. what tools and materials I would need,
3. the best time to do the work,
4. whether lawn seed would be suitable, and what type of lawn seed you would recommend,
5. and whether instant turf would also be worth considering if the price is reasonable.

I’d also appreciate any advice on ground preparation, drainage, edging, and general maintenance so I can plan the job properly from the start.

Once the yucca is removed, the focus should be on getting the base right. Make sure to remove as much of the root system as possible, strip back the weed mat and debris, and check your levels so there’s a slight fall away from the house for drainage. The clay fill you’ve used isn’t ideal on its own as it compacts and drains poorly, so it’s worth loosening it up and adding a layer (around 50–100mm) of https://www.bunnings.com.au/scotts-lawn-builder-25l-organic-lawn-soil-topdress-underlay_p3010199 over the top, then levelling and lightly compacting it.

For a budget-friendly approach, lawn seed is the cheapest option but takes longer to establish and needs more care early on, whereas instant turf costs more upfront but gives a quicker, more reliable result. For seed, Kikuyu or Couch are great hardy, sun-loving options, with shade-tolerant mixes better if the area doesn’t get full sun. Timing-wise, spring or early summer is best for planting, but you can do all your prep work now over winter so you’re ready to go. For an area of this size, I would suggest investing in turf rolls.

You’ll just need basic tools like a shovel, rake, a hose and sprinkler, lawn starter fertiliser, and some edging to keep things neat. Making sure drainage is sorted and watering consistently during establishment will make a big difference to how well the lawn comes in.
