How to remove a metal fence?

Hi,

I have a metal fence (approximately 1.7 m high and 2 m wide) along with its base that I’d like to dispose of. I’m planning to offer it for free on Marketplace first. If there’s no interest, I’m unsure how best to get rid of it.

Should I cut it into smaller pieces, or can I leave it as is and arrange for the council to collect it?

Offering it out for free online first is a great idea. Items like that often get picked up pretty quickly if they’re still in decent condition.

If it doesn’t go, you’ve got a couple of options you can explore. Council collections could usually take metal fencing, but it really depends your council and whether they will do ad-hoc pickups as opposed to a scheduled collection. Also, some will collect it as-is, while others might ask for it to be cut down into smaller sections. It’s worth checking their bulky waste guidelines or booking a collection to confirm.

Alternatively, you could contact a scrap metal recycler to see if they will arrange pickup. They’ll typically accept it without needing it cut up and may even pay for it depending on the type and condition. Now, whether they will pick it up or not depends on the business and it is something you'd have to contact them to find out.

Another option is to simply hire a ute or van through your local store, or a trailer if you have a tow bar on your car. With these, you could transport the fencing to a council waste and recycling facility, or to local scrap metal recyclers yourself.
