How to patch up hole in cornice?

Looking for tips to patch up this hole in the cornice (left by an old foxtel connection). Cornice is plaster. Thanks in advance

Hi @HReno,

This hole is a little large to purely use filler on its own. You could try building up the edges in several thin coats, letting each coat dry properly in between. Over time you’ll be able to bridge the gap, then sand it flush before priming and painting.

A couple of easier/more reliable options though:

• Push some backing material into the cavity first so the filler has something to sit against. Even a small piece of cardboard, foam, or similar can work if you can wedge it in behind the hole.
• Another good option is to place some fibreglass mesh tape over the hole and apply filler over the top. That’s probably the most straightforward approach for a repair this size in plaster cornice.

Once filled:

1. Let it dry fully
2. Sand smooth
3. Prime
4. Repaint

Using a lightweight patching compound topcoat for the final coat will usually give the best finish.
