How to revive Black tulip magnolia?

I purchased a black tulip magnolia in sep 2025, a month or so after repotting into large decorative pot the leaves all fell off and none grew back although there were buds the buds seemed dry.
after consulting the Bunnings garden experts the explained it could be transplant stress and advised me to be patient and give it some fertiliser, I fed it with some seasol fertiliser and waited after a few months when there was still no signs of life I returned to Bunnings they said it was the season change and it’s normal for the plat to loose its leaves this time of year and I should wait till the season finishes and hopefully will see new growth.
Is there any chance of helping this poor plant or have I lost it… please help!!!

From the photo, your black tulip magnolia still appears to have some viable buds and stems, so I wouldn’t give up on it just yet. Magnolias can be quite sensitive to transplanting and repotting, especially when moved into a much larger decorative pot where moisture levels can fluctuate more than expected. What likely happened is that the tree experienced transplant shock, and then the seasonal cooling pushed it into dormancy before it had a chance to recover properly. The fact that the buds became dry suggests the roots may have struggled either from inconsistent watering, poor drainage, or stress while establishing.

The good news is that the branches don’t look completely shrivelled or blackened, which is often a sign a magnolia is still hanging on. I’d recommend gently scratching a tiny section of bark low on the stem with your fingernail if you see green underneath, the plant is still alive. Keep the soil lightly moist but never soggy, make sure the pot drains freely, and avoid overfeeding while it’s stressed.

There’s definitely still a reasonable chance your tree may recover, and with a little steady care you could yet see fresh buds push through when conditions improve.
