How to repaint backyard patio concrete floor?

Hi everyone,

I want to refresh my backyard patio concrete floor (photo attached). I really dislike the current reddish-brown color and want to change it to a modern color like light grey to make the space brighter.

The area is under patio and about 35-40 sqm. The existing paint is mostly stable.

Since I'm a DIY beginner, could you please advise:

Do I need to completely strip the old red paint, or can I just sand and paint over it?

Which Bunnings products (paint, primer, etcher) and tools do I need to buy?

Hi @NornZzz,

If the existing paint is still in sound condition (not peeling or flaking badly), there’s no need to completely strip it back. You can generally paint straight over it after proper cleaning and preparation, which makes this a much easier DIY project for a beginner.

For a product like the White Knight Ultra Pave Concrete & Paving Paint, just follow the preparation instructions on the label carefully.

1. Give the patio a thorough clean
   • Scrub the surface with a stiff broom and Sugar Soap to remove dirt, dust, grease and grime.
   • If there are any oily spots, use a cleaner/degreaser.
   • Rinse well and allow the area to dry fully.
2. Check the existing coating
   • If there are any loose or peeling sections, scrape and sand those areas smooth.
   • If the current coating is otherwise solid and well-adhered, you can paint over it.
3. Apply the new coating
   • Something like White Knight Ultra Pave would work well for refreshing the space in a lighter modern grey tone.
   • Use a roller with an extension pole for the larger areas and a brush for edges/corners.

You’ll likely need:

• Concrete/paving paint
• Paint roller and tray
• Extension pole
• Paint brushes for edges
• Stiff scrubbing broom
• Sandpaper or sanding block for rough spots
• Cleaner/degreaser if needed

A light grey colour should definitely help brighten the patio and give it a more modern look.
