How to build a cover for a pool filter?

Question

I need to add a roof to the pool pump/filter surround at my new house and want it to be reasonably lightweight (as I'll need to be able to lift it up like a lid to access the filter) and resistant to rain.

I've toyed with a few ideas but am thinking of going with some Colorbond fencing sheets attached to a timber frame. I want to make sure the sheet edges aren't exposed (for safety purposes) so am thinking I can use a fence top rail strip to do this.

Has anyone done this before, or have other suggestions they could offer please?

I've considered using SunTuf polycarbonate as it's light weight, but decided I might be overcomplicating the task. Thanks.

Hi @pjandliz,

I'd be inclined to try to trim the sheeting with timber to prevent contact with the edge. A simple 70 x 35mm frame and 90 x 19mm decking as a trim around the perimeter would then allow the sheeting to be recessed within the area, as per the rendering I've put together for you below.

I think that would be a much neater solution than trying to stick things on the edge of the sheeting.

His project uses merbau for the structure and lid for a slightly more aesthetic look, but the idea could certainly be adapted to work with lightweight polycarbonate roof sheeting.

You could use some 70x35 H3 pine framing to create a basic frame, then clad it with polycarbonate roofing sheets. Borrowing from Mitchells example, you could also add hinges and gas struts to make lifting the lid as easy as possible.

Now, polycarbonate roofing is not as sharp as a metal variant, however it may still be worthwhile adding some protection to those edges. Some ideas that I have seen work are adhesive foam strips, pipe insulation or even constructing the frame with an upkick so the edge is covered. Any of these options should work as an alternative to a colorbond fence rail, however the colorbond rail would also be a good option.

If you could provide a couple of photos of what is already there, as well as some measurements and your thoughts on the above, we could certainly assist further with a basic design.
