How to replace lock on sliding patio glass door?

The lock has a lever and a lock lever (that is lockable). The lever goes to the closed position when the door is closed and then the lock lever can be engaged. However the mechanism is damaged and I need to replace the whole lock. The inside and outside handles are also worse for wear so a complete lock set would be good. I have removed the handles and lock barrel but can't pull the lock part that fits inside the door out because it appears to be hooked to something above and below it inside the door. Can I do this myself?

It’s definitely possible this is a DIY repair. From your description and photo, it sounds like you’ve already removed the handles and lock barrel correctly.

The next step would usually be removing the screws on the edge of the door that secure the mortice lock mechanism inside the frame. In your photo, these appear to be the screws above and below the lock mechanism. Once those are removed, the internal lock assembly should normally slide out of the door.

Some sliding door locks are connected to additional rods or latching components above and below the mechanism, so you may need to gently manoeuvre or tilt the lock body as you pull it free. Avoid forcing it, as the rods can bend or jam inside the frame.

Have you already tried removing the screws shown in the image? If so, let us know what happens when you try to slide the mechanism out, post another image, and we can help further.

Yes Mitchell, I should have taken the photo before I re-assembled the lock. The mechanism won't slide out and I can see that the top and bottom are tied or locked onto rods.Can it be removed without special tools? I would then take to my nearest Bunnings for a replacement but then would re-assembly be simple to do?

Thanks for the additional photo. Your lock likely has connecting rods running above and below the main mechanism, which means it’s probably a multi-point style sliding door lock.

The good news is these can usually still be removed without any special tools. Typically, once the faceplate screws are removed, the main lock body needs to be carefully manoeuvred out so the rods can be unhooked or disengaged from the mechanism. In some cases, the rods/cables connect via small clips or slots that release once the lock body is tilted or partially withdrawn.

The main thing is to work gently and avoid forcing it, as the rods can bend fairly easily. Taking a few photos during disassembly is also a great idea so you can reference how everything reconnects during reassembly.

Bear in mind that this style of multi-point lock can be a proprietary system, so you might need to contact the door manufacturer for a replacement part. I am not aware of any multi-point locks in our range.

I feared you might say that as i took a browse of your online catalogue too and couldn't see any. From the first photo you may be able to see how the top part of the mechanism has broken off. I have that part and it has the screw hole. I tried superglue but no joy. Any other ideas before I give up?

Functionally, is the lock not working @nels? Or, is it just because of this part having broke off that you wish to replace the lock? And, obviously, the handles not looking their best.

If the lock is still functional, this small piece of the face part might not be an integral part. You could always spray paint the handles to improve their look.

The broken top means the mechanism sits further back than it should when closing the door so the black lever will not close fully and consequently the silver locking lever cannot engage. I have a security screen on the outside so I guess I'm ok in that respect.

Just to add to the suggestions made, I propose taking the locking set to the store and comparing it to the https://www.bunnings.com.au/rolltrak-black-keyed-sliding-screen-door-lock_p0422871 or the https://www.bunnings.com.au/gainsborough-black-austral-lock-security-deadlock-for-sliding-door_p4185220 . I also suggest measuring the side opening for the locking set to see if it is compatible to the Rolltrak or the Gainsborough set.

One other option I can suggest as a replacement is to use a surface mounted lock such as the https://www.bunnings.com.au/rolltrak-black-sliding-patio-door-keyed-lock-set_p3984978 . It will be necessary to drill new mounting points for the lock, but it might be possible to use the existing cut out in your door assembly to mount the new door lock.

I also suggest speaking to your local store about the Door Lock Installation Service. I recommend speaking to the locksmith about your door lock so that they will be aware of the conditions of the replacement.

Good advice and the Rolltrak looks to be a close match however I am unable to remove the lock mechanism without affecting the integrity of the door so I have given up for now.

So, does the lock mechanism not pull out at all? Is it fully stuck within the frame due to the attachments? Typically, you should be able to angle and pull it out enough to pop the cables or rods off. If you go to the effort of undoing it all again, can you take a picture of how far out you can pull the lock mechanism?

Is there any branding on the door which could point you to the manufacturer for further guidance?

Presuming this is a multi-point lock, can you find the other locks? They are possibly on the top and bottom of the door. If you undo those, they might allow you to detach the cable there and then the main lock could be pulled out with the cables.

Before I even attempt another removal I noticed that the Rolltrak has more mounting screws than the 3 that mine has. I believe this is a futile job now as I don't want to change to a different style of lock that will likely require someone more capable to install.
