How to restore hardwood balusters?

Hi! My builder found several of these hardwood balusters for me (photo taken in direct sunlight). I would really appreciate some advice on how to clean and restore them. We're not sure of which type of wood was used, but I did the fingernail test and it's definitely a harder wood. One they're clean I will need to darken the wood to match the rest of the woodwork in the house, I think a walnut stain was used previously. I would prefer a natural finish, nothing too glossy. Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's wonderful to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your timber balustrades.

I suggest sanding the surface to remove any coating that has been applied to the surface of the wood. I recommend using the https://www.bunnings.com.au/rocket-sanding-block-holder-with-medium-grade-sponge_p1661396 or the https://www.bunnings.com.au/rocket-sanding-sponge-kit-10-pack_p1661616 . They are designed to offer optimal sanding results on flat, contoured or irregularly shaped surfaces.

Once you've fully sanded the surface, I suggest wiping them down with https://www.bunnings.com.au/parfix-sugar-soap-wipes-50-pack_p0517073 to remove all the sanding dust on the surface. Make sure to allow the surface to fully dry off before you test your stain.

I propose visiting your local store and going to the stain and sealer sample board in the paint department. You can then have a good look and see which stain is close to the one you are after. Please note that stains can be watered down but just remember to use exact measuring devices so that you can replicate the mix. I strongly suggest doing a test spot on one of the balustrades to make sure you can see the type of finish you'll be getting.
