Need ideas for budget friendly laundry reno

looking for ideas to do a budget friendly reno of our laundry, ideas that come to mind are perhaps something similar to the second photo I’ve included. Could you let me know what cupboards might be suitable and also the details of how to replace the sink and laundry trough? Let me know if you need any further measurements.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your laundry makeover.

Conservatively speaking, I'm estimating your wall space to be about 1850mm+ (please let me know if it is smaller). With the washer and dryer at the general width of 600mm each, it will occupy a space of 1200mm and a gap of 20mm in between them. In order for this to work the machines must be perfectly balanced to fully minimize any vibration. I suggest using the https://www.bunnings.com.au/craftright-mini-level-set_p0788044 , specifically, the bullseye's level set. Place the level in the middle of the machine so that you can adjust the legs for a perfect level installation.

I suggest using a https://www.bunnings.com.au/kaboodle-600mm-white-base-cabinet_p2662611 , a https://www.bunnings.com.au/kaboodle-900mm-wall-cabinet_p2662264 and a https://www.bunnings.com.au/specrite-2200-x-600-x-26mm-timber-multi-use-pine-panel_p0419616 for the benchtop. For the sink I recommend the Estilo Stainless Steel Single Bowl Square Sink.

@EricL it does cost more then the specrite panelling, but I thought it would be easier to wipe washing product off etc and it wouldn’t need extra product to protect it like wax or other product :)

thanks so much! Will it be easy enough to remove and replace the only laundry trough ourselves? May be a silly question but how does that work with the tap being attached to the sink also? Can Bunnings help cut the bench as needed?

Please note that plumbing work needs to be completed by a licensed professional for safety and compliance.

I suggest getting a quote from a plumber in regard to disconnection/re-connection of tap and waste fittings on the laundry tub. You can remove the laundry cabinet and tub yourself, but the plumber will need to do the plumbng part.

I'm sorry but the benchtop can't be cut on the shop saws. It is not designed for precision cutting. However, the timber benchtop is not that difficult to cut and can be trimmed down using an ordinary handsaw. My best advice is to do this at home so that you can get exact measurements. The last thing you want to do is to rush cutting the benchtop as any mistake can lead to a poor fit. Take your time and cut slow and steady, you'll end up with a well-trimmed benchtop that will fit perfectly.

Just a thought, if you have to get a plumber in for the trough, have you considered adding taps under the trough for the washing machine and having the existing ones capped off? you could end up with a much cleaner finish without the holes in the benchtop. Also with the correct waste trap, you could also hide the waste pipe the same way.

Please also bear in mind when planning the worktop that it has to be supported at the door end (and along the back) by something and that is usually a piece of timber screwed to the wall. Thing is, people sometimes forget about that intruding on the space for the washer & dryer and if you don't allow for it, you could have issues with the finished space.

thank you! Would it be possible at all to keep this exactly the same and have the bench just extend along the rest of the space on top of the washed/dryer?

The good news is that the benchtop can be placed over the washer and dryer. A timber support piece will need to be attached to the laundry tub and a https://www.bunnings.com.au/carinya-380-x-380mm-galvanised-angle-bracket_p3961573 will need to be placed at the left side and backwall to support the full run. Please note that the benchtop will be slightly higher than the steel laundry tub to give space for the washer and dryer.

also, is there anything important to know or check before mounting the wall cabinet to ensure it can hold weight etc?

In order for any of the laundry hoses to pass through you'll need to drill access holes in the benchtop. These holes don't need to be overly big just enough to let the heads pass through. In regard to the wall cabinet, I suggest making sure to anchor the cabinet to the studs of the wall to prevent it from tearing out.

As I said in my previous post, you can have taps fitted in the cupboard under the trough and the waste trap changed to one that you can fit the waste hose onto so that no pipes need to come through the top. If you do make holes in the top, please remember to seal the edges of the holes (especially if it is an MDF top) as they can be badly affected by water should some be spilled on the top and also my humidity (from the dryer).
