How to clean gas burner holes?

Hi,

Due to spillage from cooking and build up of things, the gas isn't flowing fully to all the fire holes and the flame is not hot as it used to be. We stopped using the main burner and using the smaller ones which seem to be hotter. I have been meaning to clean it up but I can't figure out what kind of liquid I can use to get rid of the build up here.

I saw some scrapers and liquids that can be used on Induction top. But nothing I can see for gas burner cleaning.

Can anyone specify what kind of liquid or scrubber I can use to clean the gas burner? I have attached the pictures of it in current state.

Would appreciate any suggestions.

Please note that before starting any cleaning activity of the burner assembly make sure that your gas is turned off to prevent any accidental ignition.

Thank you for sharing your question about your gas burner. From the photo, the burner cap and burner head have a heavy build-up of baked-on grease, food residue and carbon deposits. That build-up can block the gas ports (the small flame holes around the edge), which is why the burner is producing a weaker or uneven flame.

I suggest starting with the https://www.bunnings.com.au/glitz-500ml-degreaser_p4467175 . It is specifically formulated to cut through grease and grime and is suitable for household cleaning tasks.

Turn the gas off completely and allow the cooktop to cool. Remove the burner cap and any removable burner components. Spray the Glitz Degreaser generously onto the affected parts and let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes so it can soften the grease deposits.

For scrubbing, use a nylon scrubbing pad, a stiff nylon brush, or an old toothbrush. Avoid steel wool or aggressive wire brushes because they can damage the burner surfaces and enlarge or deform the gas ports. Once the grease has softened, scrub thoroughly and rinse with warm water.

If some of the flame holes remain blocked after cleaning, use a wooden toothpick or a soft nylon bristle to clear them individually. Avoid using a drill bit, nail, or hard steel pin as these can alter the size of the gas ports and affect burner performance.

If the residue is extremely stubborn and heavily carbonised, https://www.bunnings.com.au/krud-kutter-946ml-cleaner-and-degreaser_p0444848 is the stronger option and may require less scrubbing effort on thick, baked-on deposits. It is sold by the store as a heavy-duty cleaner and degreaser.

Before reassembling, make sure all parts are completely dry. If, after a thorough clean, the flame is still weak or only lights around part of the burner ring, the burner head itself may be corroded or internally blocked and may need replacement rather than further cleaning. In this particular instance, I suggest engaging an oven professional to investigate the reason for the poor flame performance.

Please remember to wear personal protection such as disposable rubber gloves and goggles.

I hope Eric's solution works but I think you will end up needing a plumber as the cause of this is not normally a blockage in these areas, it is normally caused by a blockage in the venturi jet. This a small Brass piece with a small hole in it and you should be careful if you try to clean it as the hole size governs how much gas can get through, and by the very nature of a venturi, how much air gets mixed with the gas. I actually worked for a company who manufactured burners (many years ago) and if you get the venturi size wrong the flames may be too big and then you will have to buy a new set of jets.

@R4addZ Is it a plumber that does the gas burner repairs? Or is it someone else?

@EricL Regarding cleaning, I removed the cap and components. However, I couldn't get to the parts where the deposits are at. Should I be disassembling the burner with the screws (see pic below) further or is that risky? I don't want to break anything and cause a leak. Please advice if its safe to remove that and clean it the same way with the degreaser you recommended.

So bottom left of the picture, what looks like two bolt heads are the jets and the whole area looks pretty messy. I would be calling a gas appliance repair specialist as against just a plumber. Usually they know what the jet size should be and will simply use a very fine drill bit to clean them out. But the whole area could do with a clean up which may well be easier to do if it is dismantled, cleaned and reinstalled.

In line with what @R4addZ has said, as you are getting to the point where you would likely need to disassemble gas fittings, it would be best that you contact a gas appliance repair specialist for assistance.

They will be able to disassemble and clean or replace any parts required.

It's best to err on the side of caution when it comes to gas.

Another question is, how much to fix this taking into account the labour costs, compared to how much to buy and install a nice shiny new hob?
