How to attach letter plate to Northcote Pottery letterbox?

Dear Bunnings Team,

I would appreciate some advise on attaching a new letter plate to my Northcote Pottery letterbox. I've purchased a plate from Bunnings which has screws (attached pic). I believe it also needs some adhesive to stick. Is Sikaflex 11fc a good product for this fix ? The flap doesn't fit perfectly to the area and there is a small gap. My research tell me that Sikaflex 11fc works well as an adhesive and filler.

Hi @judessc,

You are correct that Sikaflex 11FC, or the new version 11FC Purform would likely be the way to go. I'd say the https://www.bunnings.com.au/sika-300ml-concrete-grey-sikaflex-11fc-purform_p0628962 would be your best option in terms of colour.

It will act both as an adhesive and a gap filler, is fine for use outdoors and will stick to pretty much anything.

I'm confident there is a way to attach the plate using a combination of the 11FC Purform and screws, but I'd like to double check a few things to give the best advice possible.

When you say there is a slight gap, is it possible to get a photo showing how the plate sits in relation to the opening?

Is there still good contact with the attachment points where you can see the old white adhesive?

Do the screws still line up with material they can be driven into?

If the gap is only small, then you can likely apply a bead of your 11FC Purform, but if it is quite wide, then we'll have to look at how to add a backing for the filler to be applied against.

I thought it would be easier to show the inside of my letterbox, as they say a picture is worth a thousand words!

You may need to make up some metal bits for the screws to go through where the side cutouts are on yours.

@JacobZ thanks a lot for your advice. The plate almost fits perfectly to the area except a minor gap at the top. The nut/screws also don't quite fit the gap. Silkaflex should help with both issues. Should I use a use a fastener of some sort to hold the nut in place similar to @R4addZ pic ? Its

You could use a round galvanized washer on the condition that there is enough space to put one in and that it's the right size. But if the Sika holds it firmly in place you could probably skip installing a nut.

I recently refurbished my letterbox. I resprayed the bit you are looking to replace and put it back. The problem is, if you glue yours on, what happens next time? Prize it off and damage the structure? Do it properly and you can keep using it. Next time I need to smarten up mine, I unbolt the flap and strip it and respray it then paint the main structure then put it all back together. If you glue it, it will come down to can you get the flap off in future (note, if you can, the glue wasn't good enough).

Bunnings do metal plates something like the ones in the link below but that you can cut with tinsnips. which would probably do the job.

I called into my local bunnings to find the actual product I was thinking of, there is a link below. I use these for a number of jobs as you can cut off the length you need with tin snips and even cut them thinner if need be.
