Trying to replace the valve in a 1970s bathroom shower tap. But the tap body does not have a hexagonal top and the tap body does not appear to have an internal square drive. See photos. How do you open the tap body to replace the valve??

I suspect that the spindle body is recessed deeper into the wall and is hiding the hexagonal section. I propose removing the patch cover on the wall if possible and using a https://www.bunnings.com.au/craftright-3-piece-tap-spanner-set_p0924472 . Please note that these pieces slot into one another allowing you to have a longer piece when using it over a tap spindle.
However, if after several attempts and the spindle will not come loose, I suggest engaging the services of a plumber to remove the stuck spindle.
