hi, I have replaced a couple of pieces of corrugated iron on my roof and I wish to paint it. I have some acetone to take the oils off the new sheets. how should I use it? do I paint it on and wipe it off with a cloth? thanks
Hello @motu
We've had a similar inquiry from another member - How to restore and paint a corrugated iron roof? by @Mzav. I would not recommend using acetone as the primary cleaning method before painting the entire roof. Acetone is an effective solvent for removing grease, oils, adhesives and some contaminants, and it evaporates quickly without leaving a residue. However, it does not properly clean dirt, oxidation, salts or general surface contamination, which are often the main issues affecting paint adhesion on metal roofing.
I propose looking at using sugar soap only on iron corrugated roofing and not Colorbond roofing. Roofs are exposed to some of the harshest environmental conditions, so product performance can vary depending on the specific situation. However, because roof surfaces are subject to ongoing weather exposure, it is difficult to provide a reliable indication of the paints long-term durability in this application.
For tailored advice and the most suitable recommendation, both Wattyl and Dulux encourage customers to contact their technical support teams when working outside standard application guidelines. Their specialists can provide guidance based on your specific project requirements. Dulux can be contacted on 13 25 25 in Australia or 0800 800 424 in New Zealand. thanks. the problem is the oils on the new iron which the paint doesn't adhere to. normally it is left to weather. for a few months but I am putting solar panels up and this small piece of iron needs to be painted first. can I use acetone for that?cheers
Hi @motu,
It would be best to reach out to the supplier of your intended roof paint to enquire as to the preparation steps required for new iron roof sheeting. As we do not supply roofing paints, I am not familiar with the preparation steps or whether acetone would be a suitable cleaner. I would hate to suggest that it's safe if it were actually detrimental to your roof paint system. Eric has mentioned two suppliers above.
