How to add drainage to water logged garden?

I have issue with waterlogging after a day or two of rain and it only happens here and our back lawn. And this area never seem to completely dry off. I’d like to add some drainage but not sure what kind and how to design it. We plan for it to be no mow lawn but it seems like it’s becoming a pond/bog when the rain comes. Please advise what and how is best to tackle this before we have mould/rot issue on those dichondrias

It's good to see that there is already a surface grate in that area, as that's a good starting point.

It looks like there could be quite a bit of water running down the slope, hitting the retaining wall and then dropping out and permeating into the soil beneath it. There's a chance that adequate drainage wasn't installed behind the retaining wall when it was constructed to capture this water and direct it into the stormwater system.

Given the symptoms you're seeing, the next likely solution would be to install subsoil drainage in the swampy area. I've outlined a possible drainage layout in the image below, although a drainage plumber would be best placed to assess the site and advise on the most effective arrangement for your specific conditions.

The drainage line would collect excess groundwater and help move it away from the area before it has a chance to saturate the soil and impact your Dichondra lawn.

Please note that drainage and stormwater connections need to be completed by a licensed plumbing professional for safety and compliance. A plumber will also be required to connect any new drainage to your stormwater system.
