How to install shiplap panels over insulation?

hi everyone. I am renovating a house. I need to remove internal wall / plaster to insulate. It is then my plan to finish the wall with vertical timber panels (prob ship lap). Can these go directly over the insulation and affix to the frame or would people advise adding a layer of plasterboard / dry wall in between. What is reg practice? Thanks in advance kris

Covering your interior wall with shiplap sounds like a great renovation project and adding insulation while the walls are open is definitely the right time to improve the comfort and energy efficiency of the home. My strongest recommendation would be to check the local building requirements before deciding on the final wall build-up. In many areas, plasterboard (drywall/gyprock) is not simply a decorative wall surface; it can form part of the wall's fire and acoustic performance requirements. Because of this, many builders choose to install plasterboard first and then fix timber wall linings such as shiplap over the top, either directly or on battens.

From a practical perspective, installing a layer of plasterboard behind the timber lining often results in a better-performing wall. It helps improve air sealing, can reduce draughts, provide an additional acoustic barrier, and create a more solid backing behind the timber finish. It also makes it easier to meet building code requirements should the property ever be inspected or sold in the future.

While it is possible in some situations to fix timber lining directly to the wall framing over insulation, whether this is compliant depends on the construction type, the room location, and the local building regulations that apply in your area. Overall, if budget and wall thickness allow, I would generally lean towards plasterboard first and then the timber lining as the finished feature wall.
