How to seal new bathroom grout?

Hello. I have a new bathroom and plan to seal the grout myself. Davco Tile & Grout Sealer was recommended and I have purchased this product. My question is, does the grout need one coat or two? General grout sealing instructions online (including Bunnings video) suggest doing two coats of sealer with about an hour of drying time between, but on the Davco can/packaging (and on their website) it doesn’t mention doing a second coat.

Here is a copy of my response.

For most tile and grout sealing projects, applying one to two coats of Davco Sanitized Tile & Grout Sealer will provide effective protection. The number of coats required will depend on how porous the grout and tile are.

Before you begin, make sure the surface is completely clean, dry, and free from any dirt, dust, grease, or other contaminants. Once the area is prepared, apply an even coat of sealer using a narrow brush, allowing it to penetrate the grout lines. Take care not to over-apply the product, and wipe away any excess sealer that comes into contact with the tile surface straight away using a damp cloth to prevent residue or smearing.

After application, allow the sealer to dry completely for approximately 24 hours. Once dry, you can check whether the grout has been adequately sealed by placing a small amount of water onto the grout lines. If the water beads on the surface the grout is properly sealed and no further application is required. If the water is absorbed into the grout, apply a second coat of sealer and allow it to dry before testing again.

Following this simple process will help ensure the grout is properly sealed and protected, providing long-lasting performance and helping to keep tiled areas looking their best.
