How to remove tiles from Gyprock walls ?

Gday, I need to remove the row of brown border tiles only in a partial bathroom retile , they are laid on gyprock and seems when removing the tile the gyprock is likely to rip off too. I need to be careful as the full wall white tiles we are retaining. I’m thinking using a grout removal bit and multi cutting tool to carefully cut out the brown tiles section and gyprock also and then refit fresh gyprock to the removed section afterwards for retiling. Any other suggestions on how to do this or am I on the right track ?

Given what has been discussed above, using a multi-tool and grout removal bit would likely be the least destructive way to remove the tiles.

thanks , I will just be removing the tiles, then a contractor will be taking care of the waterproofing, tiling and epoxy grouting , cheers

Noting that @EricL has highlighted and you have responded too, will compromise the existing waterproof membrane. I'm assuming you wish to remove the bottom row of brown tiles to replace them with a new colour? I was going to ask, if recolouring the tiles was an option but see you have made a start on the removal.

I've only removed bathroom plasterboard tiles from entire walls. So, the need to partial remove has never been an issue. From experience, I don't believe you will be able to cleanly remove a single row without pulling most of the plasterboard off with them.

So, rather than try and rescue the plasterboard, I would simply remove the tiles as needed. Then cut the plasterboard out to the frame and replace it with cement sheeting and retile. Bare minimum you will need to not only use an epoxy grout, but the wall (to a recommended height) and potentially all of the floor will require a clear waterproof coating.

To ensure you have any chance of insurance coverage in the event something should go wrong down track with water ingress, I would strongly recommend this be completed by a professional service that offers warranty. Not doing so is in my opinion is taking a big risk. Its not a project I would have taken on as water ingress in bathrooms is common even with brand new ones.
