How to fix wood to masonry wall?

Hi All,

I need advice on how to fix pine dar wood strips to a masonary wall. I looked at couple of YouTube videos wherein someone suggested using concrete screws, drill holes and screw in the wood strip.

What I wanted to know is - can I use construction adhesive to fix the strip to the wall? The strips are for decorative purpose and won't be supporting anything heavy. Is it advisable and possible to using construction adhesive or should I use constrution screws (without wall plug) or should I use wall plugs and screws?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @slsujith. It's fantastic to have you join us and many thanks for your question on fixing to masonry.

Using construction adhesive alone would likely work for lightweight decorative timber strips, provided the masonry surface is clean, dry and sound.

That said, we would typically recommend combining adhesive with a mechanical fixing. The screws help hold the timber in position while the adhesive cures, and they also provide extra security over the lifetime of the moulding so it doesn't start pulling away from the wall.

If you do use mechanical fixings, any of the options you've mentioned could work. Personally, I'd use plastic wall plugs in the masonry and then screw the timber strips into those. These STAHL masonry kits are a real timesaver, as they include the drill bit, correctly sized plug and fixing screws. Masonry screws are also an option, but they still require you to pre-drill the holes before driving them in.

Whichever method you choose, please remember to wear appropriate personal protective equipment when drilling into masonry. Safety glasses, hearing protection and a dust mask are recommended, and it's a good idea to check for any concealed services in the wall before drilling.
