The project:
Adding an extra shelf to a cabinet, wardrobe or pantry is a simple way to create more storage space and improve organisation in your home.
Whether you need room for folded clothes, shoes, storage tubs or linen, installing a new shelf can often be completed in an afternoon with a few basic tools and materials.

- Tools:
- Step 1:
Measure your cabinet space and plan shelf placement.
Start by measuring the inside width and depth of the existing closet and deciding where the new shelf will sit. Consider what items will be stored on the shelf so you can allow enough height between levels.
Use a tape measure and spirit level to mark a straight reference line along both sides of the cabinet or wardrobe where the shelf supports will be installed. Taking time to measure carefully will help ensure the shelf sits level and looks professionally finished.
- Step 2:
Measure, cut and paint the MDF shelf board.
Measure and mark the MDF panel to suit the internal dimensions of your closet. Before cutting, double-check all measurements and mark your cut line clearly using a straight edge. Support the MDF securely on a workbench or sawhorses and cut slowly using a circular saw or handsaw. Wearing safety glasses during cutting is recommended.
Once the panel has been cut, lightly sand all edges and corners to remove any roughness. Place the shelf inside the closet and perform a test fit to ensure it sits comfortably within the opening and can be easily positioned onto the shelf supports. If necessary, trim or sand the panel for a better fit.
When you're happy with the fit, remove the shelf and apply a suitable primer, and once dry, your chosen paint colour. Allow the paint to dry completely according to the manufacturer's instructions before installation.
- Step 3:
Mark and drill shelf support pin holes.
Measure and mark the position of the shelf supports on both sides of the cabinet, using your level line as a guide. For most shelves, four supports are sufficient, with one positioned near each corner of the shelf. Ensure the support locations are level from side to side and set back an equal distance from the front and rear edges of the cabinet.
Using a 6mm drill bit, or one sized to suit your shelf support pins, carefully drill the holes to the required depth. Take your time and keep the drill square to the cabinet side to ensure the supports sit straight. Once the holes have been drilled, insert the shelf supports firmly into place and check that all supports are aligned at the same height. Before installing the shelf, confirm each support is seated securely and able to support the weight of the shelf and its intended contents.
- Step 4:
Install and level the new shelf.
Once the paint has fully cured, place the shelf onto the supports and check that it sits evenly on all four shelf supports. The shelf supports are designed to securely hold the shelf in position while still allowing it to be removed or adjusted later if needed.
Use a spirit level to confirm the shelf is level from front to back and side to side. Make any adjustments to the support positions if required. When correctly installed, the shelf should feel stable and sit securely on the supports with minimal movement.
- Step 5:
Organise your storage.
Finish the project by cleaning away dust, touching up any painted edges if required and organising the newly created storage space. This is also a great opportunity to add storage tubs, baskets or shelf dividers to maximise the extra room. Even a single additional shelf can make a noticeable difference to the usability of a wardrobe or cabinet.
