How to work around asbestos walls?

Hi there. I am renovating a house w asbestos walls. I am not in a position to remove asbestos at this stage and so have some questions about how i or others might work around it. First - does anyone have any ideas on how i could add a layer of insulation materials - like a sheet or cork before using liquid nails to add wood panelled sheets? The home is only 61 sq. If there is a work around to add some kind of insulation i would be interested to know. Second - if there want to replace windows - can i leave frames and simply replace windows. For example windows are aluminium and i would like to replace if i can. Any thoughts - safe creative and out of the box would be greatly appreciated.

If the walls contain asbestos, the safest approach is generally to avoid disturbing them at all. Most advice, such as this How do I manage Asbestos on my property guide, focuses on leaving asbestos-containing materials in place if they are in good condition, or encapsulating them with an appropriate sealant or paint system rather than fixing, cutting, drilling, or sanding them.

I haven't come across any recognised guidance that suggests installing insulation layers or attaching wall panelling directly over asbestos sheeting as a DIY project is possible. Any system that requires fixings, adhesives, or preparation of the asbestos surface could create risks depending on the product and installation method.

If improving insulation and adding panelling is important to your renovation plans, I would strongly recommend speaking with a licensed asbestos professional or a contractor experienced in asbestos encapsulation. They can assess the condition of the material and advise on any compliant options that may be available without increasing the risk of fibre release.

The same principle applies to window replacement. If the existing frames or surrounding wall materials contain or are attached to asbestos products, it's important to understand exactly what is present before undertaking any removal or modification work. A professional assessment is the safest way forward. If you are able to find new windows to fit in the frames, and the surrounding asbestos won't be disturbed in the swap, then that could be possible.
