How do I change an O ring in my shower diverter button?

I need to change the O ring in my shower diverter button. Can anyone one tell me how to get the button out. It is a Dorf mixer with a backing plate. I have read that I should put a cloth around the button and pull it straight out with a pliers. Any advice much appreciated.
