What thickness can AEG 18V Fusion Reciprocating Saw cut through?

I'd like to use this for cutting plywood, tree branches, etc. What's the maximum thickness it can cut? What's the longest blade it can support? Which blades should I buy for cutting wood, and is it advisable to get separate blades for pruning vs general purpose stuff (and if so, why)?

Blade length definitely has its place, but it's generally best to match the blade to the job rather than simply buying the longest one available.

A blade that's much longer than necessary can be more unwieldy to control and is more prone to flexing or bending during a cut. It also means a greater length of blade is moving back and forth, which can make the saw feel less stable.

Another consideration is what's behind the material you're cutting. If the blade is significantly longer than the timber or branch, it can strike an obstruction behind the workpiece during the saw's stroke, preventing the blade from completing its full movement.

For those reasons, it's usually best to choose a blade that's only slightly longer than the material you'll be cutting most often. You can always keep a longer blade on hand for larger branches or thicker timbers when the need arises. I typically keep a few mid-length blades for general cutting, and then if I need something longer, I'll go out and purchase one for that task.

How does the length come into play? I understand that the different blades have different teeth and TPI, but is it a bad idea to get a 12" blade to give yourself the most options for cutting bigger wood?

I've looked at the tool manual as well and it does not indicate if the unit comes with a complimentary blade. There is only an explanation of the parts of the reciprocating saw.

For wood cutting, it's worth buying a small selection of blades rather than relying on a single general-purpose option. A medium-length wood-cutting blade with around 6–10 TPI (teeth per inch) is a good all-round choice for plywood, framing timber, and construction work, while a coarse pruning blade with larger, widely spaced teeth (typically around 3–5 TPI) is much better for cutting live branches and green wood.

Having separate blades for pruning and general woodworking is advisable because green timber contains moisture and sap that can clog finer woodworking blades, reducing cutting performance and shortening blade life. Pruning blades are designed to clear chips more efficiently and cut quickly through fibrous, wet wood, whereas general-purpose wood blades produce cleaner, more controlled cuts in dry timber and sheet goods like plywood. Using the appropriate blade for each task will result in faster cuts, better finish quality, and longer blade life.
