The project:
When my husband said he’d love a coffee machine, my first thought was, “Where is it going to fit?” Our small kitchen didn’t have the bench space. But it did have an empty corner that wasn’t used and had a power point. So I built a vertical coffee bar that gave us a functioning coffee nook without sacrificing workspace. Now he has the coffee setup he wanted, and I made use of a space that had been completely wasted.

- Step 1:
My space was only 370mm wide and unless I went with a custom cabinet I couldn’t find one to fit perfectly so I got a 400mm wide Kaboodle base cabinet and customised its size by cutting the base, shelf and top support bar down. Before building the base cabinet and slotting it into the coffee nook.
- Step 2:
I painted the wall green and for the shelves I banged them up using a hammer, grinder and hand saw to make them look rougher and older. I cut the shelves to size along with the bench top. Next I stained the shelves, bench top and wall slats in antique walnut before sealing them with a clear coat to protect them.
- Step 3:
Step 3 was attaching the bench top to the cabinet and installing the peel and stick tile to the splash back.
- Step 4:
Following step 3 I attached the gallery rails I got online to my shelves and installed the wall slats using liquid nails, a level and a skinny piece of wood to act as a spacer so they were evenly spaced out.
- Step 5:
Because my cabinet was a custom size I needed to build a door to fit my space. I used 18mm ply and measured it to be a full overlay style. I used my circular saw to cut it to size then sanded the front and back along with sanding the edges and corners to be slightly rounded then I drilled the holes for the handle. Next I used the kreg hinge jig to drill the holes for the hinges. I then primed and painted my new door, installed the hinges, handle and installed the door on the cabinet.
- Step 6:
Step 6 had me cutting, priming, painting and installing the kick board. I also got the shelving brackets in the post so I installed the shelves using my mini level to ensure they were level and not wonky.

My next step was to gap fill the sides of the benches and peel and stick tiles.

Lastly it was time install hooks under the bottom shelf for cups, place the coffee machine and stage the shelving with a beans canister and decor

Take a step back and admire the space created!
