The project:
We transformed a bare side passage into stunning native garden beds to complement our ecological footprint. Using besser blocks, render and white masonry paint, we built curved raised garden beds along the side of our driveway, then filled them with a selection of Australian native plants and dark mulch. The result is a low-maintenance, drought-tolerant garden that softens the fencing and adds serious street appeal.

- Step 1:
Step 1 – Plan and prep the area
Mark out the shape of the garden beds with a string line, including where the curved corners will be. Clear the area of any existing plants, rocks or debris. Excavate the base where the besser blocks will sit to ensure a solid, level foundation.
- Step 2:
Step 2 – Lay the besser blocks
Mix mortar and begin laying the besser blocks along your marked line. Use a spirit level and rubber mallet to keep each course level. Build up to your desired height (approximately 2–3 courses). Leave gaps at the corners where the curved sections will be poured. Allow mortar to cure fully before proceeding.

Step 3 – Form and pour the curved corners
To create the smooth curved edges, bend thin strips of flexible plywood into your desired curve shape and clamp them firmly in place against the ends of the besser block runs to create a formwork mould. Ensure the formwork is well-supported and sealed at the base to prevent concrete from escaping. Mix concrete to a firm consistency and pour it into the formwork, tamping it down to remove air bubbles. Allow to cure for at least 48 hours before removing the clamps and plywood. This is what gives the beds their beautiful flowing curved finish.

Step 4 – Render all surfaces
Once everything is fully cured, apply a base coat of render across all exposed block faces and the poured concrete curves to unify the surface. Use a render float to achieve a smooth, even finish. Allow to dry completely — at least 24 hours.

Step 5 – Paint with white masonry paint
Apply two coats of exterior white masonry paint using a roller for flat faces and a brush for edges and curves. Allow full drying time between coats. The bright white finish contrasts beautifully against the dark Colorbond fencing.

Step 6 – Prepare the soil
Fill the raised beds with a quality native garden mix. Native plants prefer well-draining, low-phosphorus soil, so avoid standard potting mix with added fertiliser.
- Step 7:
Step 7 – Plant and mulch
Arrange your native plants in the beds before planting to finalise spacing. Plant, water in well, then top with a generous layer of dark mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Install drip irrigation if desired.
