The project:
We built a ground-level Merbau deck extension in our backyard, complete with an integrated raised garden bed along the back fence. The garden bed is planted with Hardenbergia (Happy Wanderer), which will trail and climb the fence over time for a lush, private green backdrop. The deck was finished with a rich decking oil to bring out the natural warmth of the Merbau timber. The result is a practical, beautiful outdoor living space that sits neatly alongside our corrugated water tank and existing lawn area.

TOOLS LIST
- Step 1:
Step 1 – Plan the deck layout
Mark out the size and shape of the deck using string lines and stakes. Check that the area is reasonably level and plan where the garden bed will sit along the back fence. Consider the position of the water tank and existing lawn edges when deciding on deck dimensions.
- Step 2:
Step 2 – Prepare the ground and footings
Excavate the area slightly to allow for the deck frame height and to remove grass and weeds. Install concrete footings or post stirrups at regular intervals to support the deck bearers, ensuring everything is level. Allow concrete to cure fully before proceeding.
- Step 3:
Step 3 – Build the deck subframe
Cut and install Merbau bearers and joists to create the deck subframe, using joist hangers and galvanised framing connectors. Use a spirit level constantly to ensure the frame is perfectly level in all directions. Space joists at no more than 450mm centres for a solid, rigid deck.
- Step 4:
Step 4 – Build the integrated garden bed
Construct the raised garden bed frame from Merbau timber along the back fence line, using the same style and height as the deck frame to create a seamless integrated look. Fix boards together with galvanised or stainless steel screws to resist rust and corrosion.
- Step 5:
Step 5 – Lay the decking boards
Starting from one edge, lay Merbau decking boards across the joists, leaving a 4–5mm gap between each board for drainage and expansion. Pre-drill each board and fix with decking screws to avoid splitting. Use a rubber mallet to tap boards into alignment as you go. Cut the final boards to fit neatly.
- Step 6:
Step 6 – Sand and oil the deck
Sand the deck surface lightly to remove any rough edges or splinters, then apply a quality Merbau decking oil with a brush or roller. Merbau timber has a natural tannin content so wipe down any excess oil bleed from the joins. Apply a second coat once the first is dry for a rich, long-lasting finish.
- Step 7:
Step 7 – Fill the garden bed and plant Hardenbergia
Line the inside of the garden bed with weed mat, then fill with a quality native potting mix. Plant Hardenbergia (Happy Wanderer) plants at regular intervals along the back fence. Fix wire or attach the existing fence palings as a support for the vines to begin climbing. Water in well and top with dark mulch.
