The project:
Bunnings Kaboodle online design/cost tool we found invaluable in bringing our dream for this old kitchen to life. We had quotes from other kitchen kits but all were beyond our budget so having no experience with cabinets/benchtops, or the design tool we decided D.I.Y was our only option with staff at Bunnings being a huge help. We designed multiple layouts, multiple color schemes, before settling on this one that aligned budget and vision. Using mostly Ryobi cordless power tools, Dulux paints and Kaboodle cabinetry topped with Mirostone benchtops we are thrilled at our end result.

- Step 1:
Demolition was fun but we did have to get the Asbestos Removalists in and the Electrical and Plumbing disconnected first for safety. So with no power Des was the lucky recipient of a cordless Ryobi torch and Ryobi cordless demo saw. This was the start of his love for his battery operated cordless tools, which by the end of our renovation, he had collected many, many more.
- Step 2:
After demolition we had the plumber and electrician come out to do the rough in for the new connections. We then started on the plaster using various Gyprock products and 70mm Cornice. The battery operated cordless Ozito sander came in very handy and soon we were ready for the paintwork using Dulux Kitchen paint range also pre painting the skirting boards for attachment later on. Ready to assemble our new cabinets that had been delivered. Like kids in a candy store! Completing the laundry first as it was a much smaller task and allowed us to familiarize ourselves with the whole process before we tackled the kitchen.
- Step 3:
Assembling the cabinetry by following the instructions and when we had the cabinet shells we placed them according to the layout. Using a hole saw attachment for the Ryobi drill we cut out the tap and plumbing holes. We used the Bosch laser to level and screwed them to the walls. Screwing a batten to the wall first where the underneath of the overhead cupboards would sit to aid in holding the weight, we screwed the overhead cupboards to the wall. The range hood cupboards required some extra thinking to fit in with our specific range hood and we needed to create a box around the ducting pipe with laminated mdf coated with white gloss contact for a seamless look. The room was 15mm wider than our cupboards and end panels, so for a better fit we used 2x7mm aluminium spacers between the overhead and range hood cupboards, which were great little highlight additions. We used soft closed hinges and drawer runner. Check out the cupboard pull out rubbish bins, rotating corner shelves, pull out spice rack and matching overhead wine rack with feature color panels.
- Step 4:
Mirostone benchtops which came pre cut, all we had to do was lift them on and follow the instructions for joining them together and connecting them to the cabinets. Simple as that but very heavy! Measure and cut splashback tiles, aluminium edge (matches our rangehood and fridge aluminium spacers) glue/grout/silicon.
- Step 5:
Benchtop sink cutouts were sawn using sink template, Ryobi 18V cordless tile saw, squaring off the corners using a Ryobi cordless jigsaw with a diamond tipped blade. The floating hybrid floor was laid, fridge cabinets assembled and screwed in place, 92mm half splayed pre painted skirting boards attached using the Ryobi Brad Nailer and the kickboards screwed on from the inside of the cupboard. We used a 90mm tile at the back of the fridge and dishwasher. We used 2x10mm aluminium spacers to give us an extra 20mm in the opening for the fridge. These were mitered and screwed to the cupboard before fitting the overhead in. The electricians and plumbers came back for the final fit off for taps, appliances, switches and lights including our feature trio over the breakfast bar. The appliances were moved around and slid in and out by using masonite strips so as not to ruin the flooring.
- Step 6:
After the handles and blinds were measured and attached, the Specrite panel was measured and cut to fit by glueing with liquid nails to the back of the cabinets as a feature to match our entry wall. The Mirostone waterfall side panel, which was measured and pre-ordered to sit on the floating floor for a neat finish, was also attached at this, the final stage of the rooms renovation. The Kaboodle design planner photo and the final result!
