The project:
This project transformed a dark, deteriorating period hallway into bright, modern feature while preserving the home’s original character. We removed the cracked lath-and-plaster walls and ceilings, stripped out the timber laths, and uncovered a stunning original brick wall. The brickwork was carefully cleaned, polished, and sealed to become a striking architectural feature. Two skylights were installed to flood the space with natural light, and all remaining walls and ceilings were professionally replastered for a flawless finish. To complete the transformation, we installed a large glazed door at the end of the hallway, creating a brighter, more open, and welcoming entrance.

- Step 1:
- Demolition - dirty work so get yourself ready (face mask and gloves). Spend a good amount of time protecting the other rooms of the house and the floor. Seal everything up as best as you can.
- Rip down render and remove all slats from walls. Use a hammer and chisel and go crazy.
- Exposing the brick we used a timber abrasive sander attached to a drill as it didn’t leave scratch marks on the brick. It does make a bit of a mess so best to do it part of the demo work
- Wipe down the brick multiple times with soapy water - yes each brick. Replace water regularly.
- Install skylights (with help)
- Plaster remaining walls and install architraves around doors
- Cornices still to do! Help.
- Seal brick wall with Crommelin sealer as it’s porous and breathable. Do this as quick as possible to reduce dust.
- Paint plaster
