Media wall with built-in shelves

The project:

My wife wanted a media wall and was very specific as to what it was to look like, so being a good husband I drew a plan then drew it on the wall, worked out what materials I needed and went on a spending spree at Bunnings. Approximately 6 weeks later the wall was finished and the room was repainted and my wife was very happy. Just to let you know I have no formal training and no trade background.

- Tools:

Hammer, Cordless drills, Drop saw and stand, levels, gyprock flushing tools, sanding equipment and painting brushes and rollers.

- Step 1:

Plan on paper what we actually want to end up with and how we want it to look including all measurements.

- Step 2:

Draw the layout on the wall, checking that the measurements are right and that we are happy with how it will end up.

- Step 3:

Start measuring and cutting the framework and fixing them into place, ensuring levels are correct.

- Step 4:

Get the electrical wiring done by a professional electrician and position all wiring ready for gyprocking.

- Step 5:

Install gyprock and angle trims to framework and cornice to the ceiling and MDF board to shelves (MDF because it is stronger for placing ornaments and such).

- Step 6:

Flush and the finish all gyprock, then sand to a smooth finish ready for painting.

- Step 7:

Cut and fit the Easycraft MDF panels to the sides and rear of the shelving areas.

- Step 8:

Paint everything from the top down, ceiling and cornice first, then walls and media wall, then the skirting board, lastly paint the MDF shelves with enamel paint (stronger paint to handle items being on it).

- Step 9:

Finally attach all power point sockets and other connectors to gyprock and insert down-lights into holes and all done.

From the initial timber framing right through to the finished feature wall, you've created a sleek, custom-built media wall that looks professionally installed. The recessed shelving, feature lighting, hidden cable management, and electric fireplace all come together beautifully to create a stylish focal point that's both functional and elegant.

Your careful planning and patience really paid off, and it's a fantastic reminder that with determination and a willingness to learn, amazing results are possible. Most importantly, it sounds like you achieved your goal, creating the media wall your wife envisioned.
