How to panel over brick pillars?

Question

I’m looking at paneling the brick pillars of a front portico with Ekodeck batten screening (composite wood panels). The information guide states these panels are unsuitable for fixing to brick/concrete walls. Can anyone explain why?

Do you think pillars are suitable for fixing these panels to?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @DWest. It's great to have you join us and many thanks for your question on Ekodeck screening.

Although Ekodeck Screening is a composite product, it still contains timber fibres. That's why the manufacturer doesn't recommend fixing it directly to masonry surfaces such as brick or concrete. Masonry can retain and transfer moisture, and if the screening is installed hard against it, there's very little opportunity for airflow. Over time, that trapped moisture can affect the performance and longevity of the product.

It's a similar principle to Ekodeck decking boards, which also have minimum clearance requirements from the ground to allow for ventilation and drainage.

Your brick pillars are certainly suitable for installing the screening onto, but I'd recommend doing so in accordance with the manufacturer's installation instructions. Fixing treated timber battens to the pillars first will create an air gap behind the screening, allowing moisture to escape and the product to breathe. Following this method will also help ensure you achieve the expected lifespan from the product and maintain the manufacturer's warranty.
