The project:
Complete DIY renovation of a run-down, barely functioning laundry. The original space had non-working sink plumbing, no usable storage or bench space, broken lighting and limited power options. The aim was to create a highly functional, inviting space for everyday use. Certified trades completed the in-wall plumbing and electrical, with all other work entirely DIY, learning as I went.

- Step 1:
STEP 1 – PLANNING
BEFORE: Broken timber window (no flyscreen, stuck winder, poorly fitted glass), non-functional sink plumbing, incorrectly sloped floor, broken light fitting, limited power, no usable storage or bench space, and wall and ceiling imperfections.
DESIGN BRIEF: To create a highly functional, modern laundry that improves practicality for everyday life.
- Measured the space, finalised the layout, and ordered all materials in advance to minimise delays.
- Step 2:
STEP 2 – DEMOLITION
- Removed all existing fixtures and cabinetry.
- Removed the old window.
- Demolished floor tiles using an Ozito rotary hammer drill with tile chisel bit, ensuring all old adhesive was fully removed.
- Step 3:
STEP 3 – LEVELLING
- Patched wall chasing from new plumbing work using Rapidset Mortar Repair.
- Installed new custom-order aluminium window.
- Re-levelled floor using Bastion Floor Leveller, ensuring adequate fall so water drains properly to the existing floor waste.
- Step 4:
STEP 4 – PAINTING & FLOOR TILING
- Painted ceiling & walls with Dulux Bathroom & Kitchen Paint (suited for higher humidity spaces)
- Waterproofed floor and sink surround, reinforcing corners and allowing full drying time between coats.
- Dry-laid tiles to confirm spacing and cuts
- Cut tiles using Ozito Angle Grinder with diamond cutting blade, and a tile cutter from the Bunnings Hire Shop.
- Laid and grouted all floor tiles
- Step 5:
STEP 5 – CABINETRY INSTALL
- Installed upper cabinets using rail install system, laser level and Ramset Masonry anchors, ensuring adequate clearance space between cabinet and future benchtop.
- Installed timber and galvanised bracket supports for benchtop
- Step 6:
STEP 6 – BENCHTOP & SINK INSTALL
- Installed lower cabinets
- Installed custom benchtop
- Cut sink opening using Ozito Jigsaw and supplied sink template
- Installed sink using included mounting system
- Step 7:
STEP 7 – SPLASHBACK TILING
- Tiled splashback using spacers and laser level for alignment
- Cut tiles as required using angle grinder with diamond blade
- Step 8:
STEP 8 – GROUTING
- Grouted splashback
- Measured, cut and installed skirting tiles around the room perimeter
- Sealed all grout once fully cured
- Step 9:
STEP 9 – AIRER INSTALL
- Installed fold-out wall-mounted clothes airer
- Installed new tapware (completed by certified plumber)
- Step 10:
STEP 10 – FINAL INSTALLS
- Installed new light fitting (electrical completed by licensed electrician)
- Installed floating shelves, hooks, handles, appliances and decorative elements.
