The project:

A month-long DIY project involving 50+ trips to Bunnings, this custom chicken coop was built to keep the chickens safe while giving them the freedom to come and go through an automatic opening and closing door. It combines security, practicality and a touch of obsession. Every detail was built by hand to create a safe and happy home

- Step 1:

-Plan the palace – Design a safe, practical home fit for some very lucky chickens.
-Hit Bunnings... repeatedly! – Make 50+ trips collecting timber, Colourbond, screws and everything else needed.
-Build the frame – Construct a strong timber structure from the ground up.
-Clad it in Colourbond – Install the walls and roof for a durable, weatherproof finish.
-Fit the automatic door – Give the chickens VIP access with a door that opens at sunrise and closes at sunset.
-Weatherproof everything – Install flashing, silicone and trims to keep the coop dry year-round.
-Add the finishing touches – Fit perches, nesting boxes and make sure every detail is just right.
-Welcome the flock home – Sit back and enjoy watching the chickens settle into their custom-built mansion.

What a fantastic chicken coop. It’s clear a huge amount of thought and effort has gone into making it secure, practical and comfortable for your chickens.

The Colourbond cladding gives it a neat, durable finish, and the automatic door is a great addition for both convenience and peace of mind.
