The project:
built a security screen for the back patio area to act both as security and a cosy spot for the dogs to hide from the weather.
- Materials:
Merbua planks x a lot!!!!, Jack outdoor slat side screen up channels x14, Cabot’s merbau exterior stain, Cabot’s deck wash.
- Tools:
3 saw horses, drop saw, tape measure, paint brush, ryobi impact driver, ryobi sds drill, scrubbing brush, drop sheet, screw drivers, drill and drill bit, level
- Step 1:
measure the gap between posts and cut the merbua planks to suit, once you’ve got the planks cut you can then start the deck wash to remove the stain and restain in chosen stain colour using saw horses as your work bench. While waiting for the posts to dry go remove the old handrail / fence and paint posts prior to fitting any hardware and then fit the jacks up screen channels making sure to use a level to get it vertical. Use Ryobi impact driver to screw the channels to posts and when fitting the planks in the channels make sure to screw the bottom 2-3 planks in place with the driver and use black deck screws to add some extra support at the base and stop planks falling out the bottom as the weight adds up.
- Step 2:
As you fit the planks check the level every couple to make sure your runs are staying level, is you need to make adjustments use the supplied jacks fitting spacers to set the gap and screw into place from within the Chanel so you can’t see the adjustment.
I went with the smaller jacks up screen channel spacers to close the gap a little more but the supplied spacers are exactly the same just a bit thicker.
- Step 3:
for the steps, measure the height you’d like this section to be and then measure the height of the steps so you can get some custom made alloy posts made from a local steel yard and follow above step to fit but in this step you’ll need to cut the jacks screen Channels to suit the step height and screw each piece into each step to create the step flowing screen.
- Step 4:
final steps for this project was to colour code the surrounding walls and add in some hanging plants to give the space a more visual touch. This screen provides privacy from outside but allows you to still see through them into the back yard from inside thus not hindering your own view.
- Step 5:
If you don’t have a drop saw of your own or want to save one very time consuming step get the measurements and when you get your planks from bunnings you can take them into the cut shop in the hardware section and have Bunnings cut them for you and save yourself a lot of time.
