The project:
Our ensuite renovation wasn't exactly planned! After our third baby was born, we were left needing to renovate on a shoestring budget after insurance didn't come to the party. Thankfully, Bunnings came to the rescue, helping us transform the space for just $2,500. It became a real family project, with my husband taking on the demolition and Papa stepping in as our expert tile cutter. Hubby insisting on buying the most expensive tile removal tool because he wasn't about to do it the hard way! It took plenty of hard work, mainly juggling the three kids, and more than a few trips to Bunnings, but we're so proud of what we achieved. It proves you don't need a huge budget to create a space you love when you've got the right people, a bit of creativity, and Bunnings in your corner.

Demolition Hammer
- Step 1:
Before Photo then Demo time! – Everything had to go, the toilet, old vanity and all the tiles, as we needed to redo the waterproofing from scratch. After I smashed my hand with a hammer, Hubby stepped in with his newly purchased demolition hammer from Bunnings. What could have taken days was knocked over in just one day!
- Step 2:
Render & Waterproof – Our enthusiasm during demolition may have taken a little more wall than intended, so I used some leftover render to patch and smooth everything before waterproofing the wet areas. Thankfully, Papa, the family jack-of-all-trades, came to teach me the tricks of the trade.
- Step 3:
Painting - Painting while we waited for coats of waterproof to dry. Two coats needed for the paint.
- Step 4:
Tiling – Tiled both the floor and walls using large-format tiles for the main areas, with penny round mosaics in the shower as they made it easier to achieve the correct fall to the drain. Finished with white grout for the large floor tiles and grey grout for the penny rounds.
- Step 5:
Everything back in – Installed the vanity, toilet and tapware. This was one step that was beyond Dad and me, so we called in a plumber mate to help. We finished the space with some beautiful plants from Bunnings and a new bath mat from Spotlight.
