The project:
I took on my first ever DIY project to transform my toddlers room into the pink princess room of her dreams. Honouring the traditional features of our 1920s home
- Materials:
All items for the box moulding from Bunnings (image attached) along with Dulux lipgloss half in low sheen and enamel for the painting. Drop sheets and rollers also from our local Bunnings in store!
- Tools:

Mitre tool (initially tried the mitre box and saw from Bunnings but found a mitre sheer on Amazon which worked better for the fine trim. Would not be suitable for the dado rail)

- Step 1:
I used painters tape to measure out the size of the box moulding. Considering things like placement of existing power points and what height I wanted the dado rail
I opted for 1200mm for the dado rail with 100m spacing between all boxes and existing rails, with the exception of the gap between the skirting board and lower portion of the box at 140mm to ensure the power points didn’t ruin the flow
- Step 2:
I then measure out each of the four sides for each box. Marking it with a pencil and trimming on a 45degree angle
- Step 3:
using liquid nails and a caulking gun I zig zagged the glue on the back of each piece for maximum adhesion.
One thing I wish I knew was how difficult it would be to get the glue off later. If you need to reposition the piece I would try and remove or smooth the glue asap
use a level to ensure each part is exactly level as otherwise this will mean the pieces don’t fit together. Use painters tape to hold in place overnight while the glue sets
- Step 4:
no gaps all joins and edges to ensure a professional look. Smoothing with a paddle pop stick or cloth
- Step 5:
remove any left over glue from walls and sand until smooth. I used a nail file in sections to get the same profile as the moulding in sections with heavy fill
- Step 6:
prep and paint - voila!
