The project:
After renovating our home, the front garden was the last piece of the puzzle. We transformed a sparse garden into a modern coastal space with tropical plants using everything from Bunnings - from the edging and pebbles to the plants themselves. We tackled it as a DIY project, learnt as we went, and are so proud of what we created. It completely changed the street appeal of our home and made it feel finished.
- Materials:
- Tropical feature plants for height.
- Silver foliage for contrast.
- Blue succulents to tie in with the coastal feel.
- Tuscan Path 10kg Crushed Ivory Pebble to brighten everything.
- Jack 1180 x 130mm Galvanised Steel Interlock Garden Edging.
- Mostly drought-tolerant planting with a few lush tropical elements.
- Tools:
- Marker spray paint
- Spade
- Rubber mallet
- Tin snips
- Wheelbarrow
- Shovel
- Rake
- Step 1:
Gathered all the tools and materials
- Step 2:
Used marker spray paint to mark out the new garden edge and map out the plant layout, balancing the heights with a mix of ground covers, medium-sized plants and feature plants.
- Step 3:
Used a spade to dig a shallow trench along the marked line. Started at the right side and gently bent the Jack interlocking edging to follow the curve before placing it into the trench.
- Step 4:
Stood the edging upright and gently tapped it into the ground using a rubber mallet. Slightly damp soil made this easier. Connected each new piece by inserting the metal tab into the hole to interlock the edging. Continued installing the edging until reaching the end, then used tin snips to trim the final piece to fit.
- Step 5:
Picked up a mix a mix of tropical plants and succulents from my local Bunnings and dug holes to suit each size plant.
- Step 6:
Emptied the bags of pebbles into a wheelbarrow and placed it next to the garden for easy access. Used a rake to smooth the soil around the plants before using a spade to spread the pebbles evenly throughout the garden.
- Step 7:
Stepped back and admired the finished DIY garden, completed over a couple of weekends.
- Step 8:
What a difference 12 months can make. My childhood home's front landscaping has been completely transformed into a space that's both functional and welcoming for my family.
