The project:
tore out the old, collapsing fiberboard shelves etc: filled holes, wallpapered, fitted EZY Storage shelving, and because because the child whose room it is wanted a jungle theme, finished the floor with Astro-turf.

- Step 1:
- Remove sliding doors, then start demolition; remove old shelving etc from wardrobe using hammer and screwdriver where required. In my case, the old shelving was disintegrating, so it was a messy process…
- Step 2:
Paint any visible trim in same paint as the outside trim- especially where old timber shelves were fitted.
Fill and sand all holes/imperfections in the walls and clean with sugar soap to ensure a smooth surface for wallpaper to adhere to
- Step 3:
Using ladder, hold wallpaper roll at top of wall with slight overhang so you can trim when affixed, and let the remaining roll rest on the floor. Cut wallpaper about 30mm longer than where it reaches the skirting board/floor. Take the piece of wallpaper to work table and place it face down
- Step 4:
mix wallpaper paste in a plastic bucket per instructions and apply to the back of the cut piece of wallpaper with a paintbrush.
Once pasted, align the wallpaper with the corner of the wardrobe wall and roll it onto the wall working from top to bottom, cleaning up any excess paste as you go. Adjust the position of the wallpaper as required; it can be tricky to get right when you’re just starting to work with it.
Once happy with the position of the sheet on the wall, trim the top and bottom of the wallpaper to sit flush with the architrave/ceiling at the top and the skirting board/floor at the bottom.
- Step 5:
take the remainder of the wallpaper roll (or a new roll when required), and hold it against the wall next to the piece you have just pasted on. Make sure the pattern aligns and repeat step 3, trimming any excessive overhang off so you have a manageable-sized sheet.
Repeat step 4.
keep going until you have covered every wall, paying particular attention to corners; they can be very fiddle and require a plastic spatula and many realignments to get right. Once all wallpaper has been fitted and trimmed, leave it to dry for the required time period.
- Step 6:
One the wallpaper is dry, remove the EZY Storage racking from the packaging and measure/mark the wardrobe wall where the screws for the racking will be located.
Fit racking to the rear wall, using player plugs where required, but trying to use as many studs etc as possible.
Once racking is secured, fit shelves/drawers etc as required.
- Step 7:
measure floor of wardrobe and mark/cut artificial grass to roughly the correct shape, utilizing the initial straight edge of the roll if possible.
Place artificial grass on the floor of the wardrobe and trim to fit using a utility knife.
- Step 8:
Re-fit sliding doors, clean up any remaining mess and sit back and and admire your work.
