The project:
My aging mother was having trouble with her old Laundry since her chemo. So I decided to give her a better laundry to make life easier
- Materials:
EEverything Was from Bunnings.
Ply sheeting, flatpack cupboards, tiles, adhesives, plumbing, grout, polyurethane seal, the bench tops/shelf, window trim, the floor drain, paint, everything.
We saved our Flybuys for store vouchers to keep costs down.
- Tools:
Drill, saws, tile cutters, pipe cutters, pliers, paint brushes, hammers, drivers, spanners, trowels, rollers, levels, lasers..... and many more. All from Bunnings collected over the years.
- Step 1:
Strip the room and damaged sheeting. Disconnect water and power to the room.
- Step 2:
Arrange for electrician to reroute power to nominated locations and sheet whilst he was onsite to install new power point.
Don't lick electrical sockets. Leave it fir the pros
- Step 3:
Sheet floor to help level out old floorboards. Gentle fall of around 1% to drain location. Drill out drain hole. Install drain base. Seal floor and apply tiles using flexible floor adhesive. Cut as necessary using diamond cutting disc on a grinder or tile cutter. Carefully mark and cut the small inlay for the drain centre. See image
- Step 4:
Build flatpack cupboards and install. Screw and affix each to the walls. Cut holes for piping and access to power etc. Custom cut a small flatpack to fit in the remaining space between the washing machine and larger cupboard. Be sure to seal the cuts on your flatpack to avoid swelling from moisture in future. Cross screw everything for strength.
- Step 5:
Prepare, cut, sand, and seal benchtop and cut shelf to approximate size. Loosely install benchtop and shelf (braced not fixed in). Mark sink location, and shape of shelf for cutting later. Apply wall tiles with wall adhesive cutting appropriate holes for power and plumbing. Then remove shelf and benchtop
- Step 6:
Final cuts to benchtop and shelf. Sand and seal with polyurethane. Multiple coats. Install bechtop and shelf. Affix well and cross screw for strength.
- Step 7:
Install sink and connect plumbing. Swear lots because there's always a leak to deal with.
Seal around the sink edge, shelf, bechtop/tile edges, with mold resistant silicone of the appropriate colour. Add stainless strip edging to open tile edges to neat it off and unsure no ants can borrow in and the tiles can't be bumped off in the future.
- Step 8:
Paint remaining walls. Clean up and wipe everything down. Collect hugs from mum. All done
