Garden bed cultivation winter season i have mulch on since this summer do I need to turn it up side down with the showel? Or cultivate with the required tool?
Hello @Dorin88
Your garden bed is looking well cared for, and the mulch has done a wonderful job protecting the soil over summer. As winter is the ideal time to prepare for the next growing season, there is no need to dig the bed over or turn it upside down with a shovel. Instead, gently cultivate just the top 5–10 cm of soil with a garden fork or cultivator, allowing the remaining mulch and any partly decomposed organic matter to blend naturally into the surface.
This light cultivation helps improve soil structure, encourages healthy microbial activity, and keeps the soil loose without disturbing it too deeply. If you have some finished compost, this is also an excellent time to spread a layer over the bed and lightly work it into the surface before replacing any remaining mulch. By the time spring arrives, your soil will be rich, healthy, and ready to support strong, vigorous plant growth.
