Curved garden path using decorative gravel

The project:

I needed to create a curved garden path so that I could align with a set of steps on a retaining wall. I chose to use a timber edge with a gravel infill.

- Materials:

90mm treated pine decking boards

Survey pegs

Geotextile fabric

Screws and staples

Deck stain

FCR base

Decorative gravel

Star pickets

- Tools:

steam Iron

Foil and rags

Saw

Battery drill

Paint brush

Wheel barrow

Shovel

- Step 1:

I used a steam iron to curve the wood as I don’t have a steam box. First wrap the wood with a wet rag and then wrap with several layers of tin foil. Iron each side for at least 30 minutes, regularly turning. Then carefully bend the timber to desired curve using star pickets. Let cool down and keep retained by star pickets for a few days to hold its shape.

- Step 2:

The timber was coated with two coats of deck stain. I built the path by keeping the timber edge in position with survey pegs. Fabric was fixed with staples for weed control. FRC was put down as a base and gravel to finish.

I was totally amazed by how you created those amazing curves in the timber edging. I first assumed that you had a steam box somewhere in your garage, but as I read your description of using a steam iron, I was very impressed. I did not realize that you could actually achieve these kinds of curves using an ordinary steam iron. Thank you so much for sharing this excellent technique, your garden path looks fantastic!

Definitely filing this project away. Was really impressed by how you made those curves work! I saw the splash page and though "How did he do that, it looks like decking timber?" :) Then when I read through my brain went "Oh yeah! Thats a winner!"

Did you come up with that ironing idea as I havnt seen it anywhere before? And the last question :) Has the timber wanted to return to being straight ish?

Hi @Dave-1,

To answer your question, I came across this tip on You tube when I was researching steam boxes. You have to be patient. I took about four hours to do four bends, but it was a cold wet day anyway.

Another tip - don’t use your wife’s expensive iron. I bought a really cheap one from Kmart. The timber does tend to want to straighten out which is why I left it contained by the star pickets for a few days. After that it was fine.
