The project:
Known to his grandchildren as Poppy Max, Dad transformed our outdated timber kitchen into a beautiful family space inspired by timeless Hamptons style. The renovation was completed to maximise storage, improve functionality and create a warm, welcoming hub where our family can gather for years to come. Using his incredible DIY skills, Poppy Max handcrafted bespoke features, extended the cabinetry to the ceiling, built a statement island and incorporated thoughtful design details to create a kitchen that looks professionally built. More than just a renovation, this project is a reflection of his creativity, craftsmanship and the love he pours into everything he builds.

- Step 1:
Planned the new kitchen design
Poppy Max assessed the existing timber kitchen and redesigned the space to improve storage, functionality and visual impact while keeping the kitchen practical for everyday family life.
- Step 2:
Removed the old kitchen
The outdated timber cabinetry, finishes and fixtures were removed, preparing the space for a complete transformation.
- Step 3:
Installed and modified Kaboodle cabinetry
Kaboodle cabinets were used as the foundation of the kitchen, then customised by Poppy Max to better suit the space and achieve a more built-in, high-end finish.
- Step 4:
Extended the cabinetry to the ceiling
Poppy Max built additional upper sections and trim work to take the cabinetry to ceiling height, increasing storage and creating a custom joinery look.
- Step 5:
Built the statement island
A large central island measuring 2400mm x 900mm was constructed to improve bench space, storage and family gathering space. Decorative mouldings were added to give it a furniture-style finish.
- Step 6:
Created bespoke feature pieces
Poppy Max handcrafted custom details including the decorative rangehood cover, cabinetry trims, end panels and feature joinery to elevate the kitchen beyond a standard installation.
- Step 7:
Prepared and painted the cabinetry
The cabinetry and custom joinery were carefully sanded, primed and finished using the Dulux Renovation Range to create a clean, durable white finish.
- Step 8:
Installed fixtures and finishes
The sink, tapware, cabinet hardware, benchtops, splashback and lighting were installed to bring the design together and add contrast, warmth and functionality.
- Step 9:
Completed detailed finishing work
All gaps, joins and trims were filled, sanded, caulked and painted to create a seamless, professionally finished result.
- Step 10:
Styled and completed the family kitchen
Final styling touches were added to create a warm, welcoming Hamptons-inspired kitchen that is now the heart of the home and a lasting reflection of Poppy Max’s craftsmanship.
