The project:
I needed to silicone seal (C-section/eve) on a small veranda extension which was over 1.5m reach. I could not reach or access on the roof. My only option was manufacture a long caulking gun that I could use from a ladder. The result is this unit that is 1.3m long (excluding nozzle and reach).
- Materials:
Standard off the shelf caulking gun. 19 x 900mm metal tube. 1.2m x 6mm steel bar. 19mm adjustable pillar ends. All purchased from Bunnings.
- Tools:
hacksaw, cordless drill, rivet/rivet gun, tap&die (tap the ends on the 6mm rod), small bolts.
- Step 1:
- Disconnect the standard caulking gun (silicone cartridge holder & trigger
- Thread the ends of the steel rod.
- Connect the steel rod to the caulking gun rod with an extended 6mm threaded joiner.
- Fit the 2x pillar ends to the back of the silicone holder. Done to provide an acceptable joining length for the hollow tube. 5
- Repeat this for the handle/trigger end.
- Connect the steel centre rod to both ends & wallah, a 1.3m caulking gun.
complete this and other projects for ground of step ladder height and not via extension ladders or climbing onto roofs. - This project was done after I fell off a ladder during construction. While sustaining injuries, I recovered to continue pottering and minor household projects.
