Backyard reno with new turf and metal edging

The project:

We started with a backyard which was mostly gravel and a huge fig tree which was causing some plumbing issues underground. We now have a useable child friendly space which looks great year round!

- Materials:

110m2 of TiffTuff turf, metal garden edging, soil, mulch, plants, stepping stone pavers

- Tools:

Kanga Loader, shovels, welder, wheelbarrow

- Step 1:

We manually removed some brick pavers to make more space for grass

- Step 2:

Hired a kanga loader from Coats Hire to remove 8 trailer loads of gravel and dirt. We brought in around 6 loads of yellow sand.

- Step 3:

Once the ground was flat, installed metal garden edging and welded together to hold in place.

- Step 4:

We laid 110m2 of turf and started planting trees in the garden beds. We went with mostly natives and used a Lilly Pilly for a hedge along the side fence.

- Step 5:

We added mulch to the garden beds and installed a recycled timber trellis for a passionfruit vine and side fence and gate.

This is a fantastic transformation. Removing eight trailer loads of gravel and preparing 110m² for turf would have been a huge job, but in doing this, you have created a much more practical and child-friendly backyard that I'm sure will be the setting for some wonderful memories in the future.

The metal edging gives the garden beds a really neat finish, and the combination of native plants should look even better as everything establishes.

I really love the recycled timber trellis as well. It looks like you've used railroad sleepers, which are going to be super strong and look wonderful in their new application and setting. I'd love to see it once the plants have grown in over the trellis.
