How to repair hole in weatherboard?

I have a hole in the weatherboard as indicated in the photos. What is the best method to repair this? Do I buy another piece of weatherboard and cut a piece of the same size and glue in? hole is approximately 20mm in diameter and 20mm deep. I have currently put some weatherproof tape to prevent water ingress.

I'd suggest the best option here is to fill the hole flush with https://www.bunnings.com.au/turbo-175ml-builders-bog-flexipack_p1670144 , give it a sand, then prime and paint it to match the surrounding weatherboard.

The only thing you'd need to do that is slightly out of the ordinary, is potentially add a backing to the hole. If you remove the tape and feel the back edge of the weatherboard, is there a cavity behind it?

Typically, there would be, in which case, you'd need to add a backing, otherwise the bog will just fall through the hole. You can use the technique shown in How to repair a hole in an internal door, using a paint stirrer and some liquid nails to add a backing that you can apply your Builder's Bog over.
