1950's poolside powder room update

The project:

Budget Reno of 1950's poolside loo that was covered in mould on all surfaces. Cleaned down all surfaces, prepared with mould killer, undercoat of mould repellent undercoat, top coat with feature wall in Ocean Blue. Made feature trim of cistern backing board with self adhesive vinyl tiles, made open shelf from drawer shell painted to match feature wall, adding teak strip trims (varnished), new accessory fittings in chrome, cane light shade replaced milk glass light shade. Homage paid to original house by keeping original door, door fittings and handle and tiles.

- Materials:

Mould killer, microfibre cleaning cloths, mould repellent undercoat, Taubmans Deep Ocean paint, Taubmans white semi gloss, teak trim, drawer shell, chrome toilet roll holder, towel hook and handbag hook, decorative self adhesive tiles, toilet brush, faux ferns, blue mat, frog tape for painting, roller paint set, cutting in paint brush, cane lampshade,sensor light bulb, new cistern float and parts. Small bracket for open shelf

- Tools:

Mitre Box and hand saw ( teak trim), step ladder, microfibre cleaning cloths, paint roller, paint brushes, frog tape, tape measure, liquid nails, clamps, sandpaper, spirit level, screwdrivers, power drill, Stanley knife, steel rule,

- Step 1:

1. Clean Down all surfaces with mould kiler, light sand all over

- Step 2:

2. Undercoat with mould repellent undercoat paint

- Step 3:

3. Tape where feature wall colour meets white wall colour

- Step 4:

4. Paint all surfaces - feature wall, remove tape, when totally dry and set, tape opposite for white painting

- Step 5:

5. Open shelf: paint all surfaces except back in colour matching feature wall; measure and cut mitred corners fir teak trim; varnish teak trim and adhere with liquid nails and clamps to ensure neat fit on corners (light sanding) paint small brackets in feature colour, Centre shelf on wall and secure to wall with small brackets

- Step 6:

6.layout and centre vinyl tiles and cut around cistern leaving enough to go behind edges of cistern and cut out with Stanley knife. Adhere tiles to cistern backing board.

- Step 7:

8. Add mat and decor and brush.

You have done a wonderful job transforming a mould-covered space into a bright and practical poolside loo on a budget. The Deep Ocean feature wall, decorative cistern backing and repurposed drawer shelf work really well together and give the room plenty of character.

It is also great to see that you retained the original door, fittings, handle and tiles as a nod to the home’s 1950s history.
