The project:
In order to lift my portable spa off the ground, I built a custom deck to put the spa on. Any rain or overflow water now goes under the deck and down the drain below. I also installed mood lighting on it as well to add to the ambience of a night time spa.
- Materials:
Pine sleepers for base of spa deck
pine panels for top of deck
inground lighting for decking
stain for deck
marine carpet for under spa
spa also purchased from Bunnings
- Tools:
Cordless drill, jigsaw, circular saw, reticulating saw, level, electric sander
- Step 1:
After a sleepless night of designing the deck in my head and then purchasing the timber the next day, I began to lay the panels onto the sleeper support braces. Each of the supports were cut to length to achieve the desired end shape, including the stair at the front to step into the spa, and a support base at the back for the spa filter. Once all panels were laid, they were screwed firmly into the sleeper base.

I then started to do the shaping of the final product, using a jigsaw to cut straight panels into the resultant circle shape.

Then it was time to drill the holes to install the lighting
- Step 4:
Time to sand all of the edges down
- Step 5:
Then flip it over, join the wiring for the lights, attach the feet so that the timber was not directly on the ground and stain the underside.
- Step 6:
Back upright again, lights fitted and ready for staining on top
- Step 7:
Remove all the drop sheets and protection and put in place. Marine carpet, cut to fit, as protective surface under spa.
